Characterplus Survey Process

An evaluation process has evolved over the past ten years based on the Ten Essentials of the CHARACTERplus Process. The support of two federal grants and a statewide initiative enabled us to test and refine the evaluation approach in schools throughout Missouri. The U.S. Department of Education spoke of these efforts as the highest quality and among the most ambitious in response to the federal grants.

The survey instruments are administered online. They assess the perceptions of staff, students and parents about these factors:

  • Autonomy (Students’ Sense of)
  • Belonging (Students’ feelings of)
  • Community (Students’ sense of)
  • Competence (Students’ sense of)
  • Parent Involvement-Home
  • Parent Involvement-School
  • Parent-Staff Relations
  • Safety
  • School Leadership
  • School Quality
  • Staff Culture and Belonging

There is an efficient method of scoring and a professional analysis and report of the results. The information becomes a resource that guides priorities and planning in character education. The survey process includes a planning session with staff or a core team, usually scheduled in the spring.

Cost of the Survey Process:
The process is valued at $1,200 per school. It is partially underwritten by CHARACTERplus and provided to member districts for $600 per school, a savings of $600. Included are:

  • An Administration Manual, School ID, and Password.
  • Phone conference and test of the system with Technology/Survey Coordinator.
  • Online surveys for as many students as the school decides from Grade 3 and up.
  • Online staff surveys which can be extended to include support staff.
  • Online staff "implementation" surveys to assess the level of intentional character education.
  • Online Parent surveys
  • A school report analyzing the collected survey data

Review Session Required
A review session with the staff or a core leadership team (including administrator, staff, and parent representatives) is an integral part of the survey process. This is scheduled with each participating school.
